Guthrie Health System, Sayre, Pennsylvania, lacked certified interventional radiology coders and found it difficult to recruit them. Diagnosis codes were entered inconsistently and a coding backlog was a growing concern. “We needed an expert to fill the gap,” said Joe Sawyer, Guthrie’s radiology service line vice president.
With limited staff, the workflow and processes in place failed to deliver optimal consistency in turnaround time. Staff vacations caused backlogs and, given the constant flow from a busy radiology practice, taking the time to recruit new coders was not an option. Senior management had a decision to make: face a revenue black hole due to lack of staff or outsource to expert coders now.
Guthrie partnered with HRS and found the required expertise in less time and at a lower cost than it would take to hire internal coders. HRS helped the organization re-evaluate radiology workflow, eliminate inefficiencies and strengthen their monthly reporting mechanism to monitor denials, compliance and revenue.
“Now, our coding is more reliable and there is much more accountability within the radiology revenue cycle,” Sawyer said.
